Caleb Wilson Kenner LA Obituary, Death:- Southern University has placed Safiyy Abdel-Ra’oof, the graduate president overseeing the Omega Psi Phi fraternity chapter, on administrative leave as investigations continue into the hazing-related death of Caleb Wilson.
Wilson, a 20-year-old member of the university’s Human Jukebox marching band, died on February 26 after suffering multiple blows to the chest during an alleged fraternity initiation. Authorities have arrested three individuals in connection with Wilson’s death.
Caleb McCray, 23, faces charges of criminal hazing and manslaughter for allegedly delivering the fatal punches. Additionally, Kyle Thurman, 25, and Isaiah Smith, 28, who served as the fraternity’s “dean of pledges,” have been charged with felony criminal hazing.
Investigators revealed that the hazing occurred in a warehouse where pledges were struck in the chest with boxing gloves. Wilson collapsed during the hazing ritual and suffered a seizure. Rather than immediately calling for medical help, fraternity members transported him to a hospital but initially misled medical staff about the cause of his injuries, delaying appropriate treatment.
This failure to disclose the truth may have impacted efforts to save Wilson’s life. In response, Southern University has suspended all fraternity and sorority pledging activities for the remainder of the academic year.
The Omega Psi Phi fraternity chapter has also been ordered to halt all activities while investigations continue. University officials have expressed deep sorrow over Wilson’s death and reaffirmed their commitment to student safety and eliminating hazing practices.
This incident has reignited national conversations about fraternity hazing, which has led to numerous student deaths across the country. Advocates are calling for stricter policies and stronger accountability measures to prevent further tragedies. As investigations progress, Wilson’s family and the Southern University community mourn his loss and demand justice.
